Event Description:

Learn about composting and Bokashi! Join Solana Center for this 2-hour presentation at the beautiful Tecolote Canyone Nature Center where you will learn the basics of backyard composting and an introduction to Bokashi- a way to compost ALL of your food waste. Using trial-tested advice and interactive demonstrations, the expert educators will teach you all you need to know to get started with a bin that fits your needs and lifestyle.

We'll also give you a brief introduction to Bokashi which a method for fermenting all organic waste, including meat, dairy and liquids. It was developed in Japan and used in Asia to ferment food prior to composting. The process uses lactobacillus bacteria to predigest waste matter, which minimizes odors and decreases composting time.

This workshop will cover the following topics:

  • What is composting and why it is so important
  • What tools and materials you'll need
  • Which items are compostable and which are not
  • Harvesting and using your compost
  • What is Bokashi?
  • How is it used?
  • Demo of actual Bokashi fermented food waste (FFW) compost
