RETO
Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, a popular craft brewery and restaurant, is located in North San Diego County. Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co. CEO and founder, wanted to create an eclectic setting that would be unique, organic, and versatile. The one-acre site was challenging because it is located within a detention basin that accepts stormwater from the surrounding commercial/industrial park.
Solución
Schmidt Design Group, Inc. collaborated with the owner to realize his vision and created a one-acre park-like environment. The gardens located within the stormwater detention basin required the accommodation of natural drainage, stormwater flow, and several fountain features. The result is a multi-functional space adjoining the restaurant that is used for dining, relaxing, exploration, and special events. The site’s goal of reducing environmental impact is reflected in the choice of construction and furnishing materials: reclaimed wood and bricks, stones collected on site, and quarried stone and leather “rejects” all serve to promote sustainability as well as beauty. The plant palette concentrates on California native and other Mediterranean plants appropriate to the San Diego region as well as wetland and riparian species that thrive in the wetter areas. The planting, combined with a high-efficiency irrigation system, are anticipated to reduce the water use by 52% over a traditional landscape composed of lawn and shrubs (an anticipated savings of 57,592 gallons/month).
